About 21 miles of the 600-mile pipeline will run through National Forest Service lands, including where it will cross the Appalachian Trail.

In October, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission signed off on the $5 billion project that will carry natural gas through West Virginia and North Carolina. The project is still waiting on water certifications in North Carolina and Virginia.
